Learning how to make films using an Ipad
For the Mortlake Shines project, Grade 5/6 students are using their Ipads to create a series of mini-documentaries around Mortlake. They are using downloaded Apps to make their Ipads work better as video cameras and sound recorders. They will also edit their projects on their Ipad and eventually publish them online.
Week One (April 15th): Sound Recording and Interviewing Skills
Students learn how to capture good sound using the App 'Pocket Wavepad' to record. They learn interviewing skills, such as how to ask good questions and how to set the sound levels on their sound recorder (Ipad) . To practice their techniques, they interviewed each other.
Week Two (April 22nd): Camera Skills, The 5 Shot Method, Interview Skills and filming at the Anzac Day March in Mortlake
Students continued their work on interviewing but this time they used FilmicPro, a video camera App, to film their interviews. They practiced how to set up their video cameras (Ipad) to best capture an interview. They also practiced camera techniques and learnt about composition (Rule of Thirds), the Five Shot Method, focus, exposure and white balance. They were then thrown into the deep end by interviewing RSL Member Merv Hampson about the importance of Anzac Day. As a whole class collaboration, the students then planned what to film on Anzac day and then when Anzac Day arrived, they broke off into teams and filmed the event (The Anzac Day March in Morklake).

The 5 Shot Method : 1. Close-Up on Hands, 2. Close-Up on Face, 3. Mid or Wide Shot on whole action, 4. Over-the-Shoulder Shot, 5. Another shot of choice (something creative)
Week Three (April 29th): TimeLapse, Pre-Production Planning and filming at the Alan Wood's Gem Studio
Students enjoyed watching and critiqueing their Anzac Day footage, which in the coming weeks, will be made into a short film. They were introduced to Time-lapse and had a blast creating Time-lapse films with the ITimelapse App on their Ipads. You can view their mini-masterpieces on this website.
The Students have chosen topics for their mini-documentaries and teamed up for their projects. Next week, they begin to film their projects so they have been very busy planning their films: storyboarding, writing interview questions, choosing locations and scripting.
All of the Grade 5/6 students took a visit to Alan Wood's Gem Studio and learnt all about Gem Stones, Olivine and fossiking at Mount Shadwell. Lachlan H, Lachlan G and Dusty are working together to create a mini documentary on Mortlake's Olivine story. Next week, they will take a visit to Mount Shadwell to document what goes on there.

Week Four and Five (May 6th-13th): Students work on their individual film projects
Imogen and Isla spend a morning with Imogen's Nan Lyn to find out what it is like to be a Native Animal Rescuer. While they were there, they had the chance to feed the baby joeys with milk bottles.
Keely and Dusty took an excursion to the Mortlake Fire Station to interview Keely's father Tony about being a member of the country fire department. While they were there, Dusty and Keely had the fun opportunity of riding in the fire truck.
Brodie and Jess met up with Keith Hargreaves from The Quarry to get an insight into a typical day at The Quarry. While the girls interviewed Keith, the rest of the Grade 5 and 6 class enjoyed a morning fossicking for Gem Stones under the instruction of keen fossicker, Alan Wood. Isla and Emily found a high spot to set up a Time Lapse of the huge machinery digging, sorting and shifting dirt and rocks.
Week Six (May 20th): Students edit their projects
Apart from Taylah and Jordan- who are working on a 'St.Colmans School' documentary- the groups are now all finished filming and are up to editing their films. This means watching through their interviews to work out what they will include in their finished stories and working out what shots they will keep. The first thing they are doing is creating an 'edit log' and then an 'edit plan' before they jump onto the editing program. The students are using the 1st Video App on their iPads to edit their projects.

Week Nine (June 17th)
Exciting times! The students are getting nearer and nearer to completing the edit on their projects. Just a few more sessions on the iPads and we will be ready for our Mortlake Shines Community Screening. Soon, you will also be able to watch and read about their films on this website.
Today, the students had a visit from Local ABC Radio Presenter Jeremy Lee. He interviewed Lachlan H, Lachlan G, Dusty and Taylah about their experience of the film-making project. You will be able to listen to their interview on ABC Radio 1602 AM on Thursday 20th June at 7.10am. If you missed it, you can listen to the interview on the ABC South West Victoria website Young film makers set to make Mortlake shine
As you may know, the students started the Mortlake Shines project with two group projects before getting stuck into their own films. The story that they filmed on Anzac Day and Merv Hampson can now be viewed on the Mortlake Shines Vimeo Channel. You can read more about the Mortlake Anzacs production here.
