'Mortlake Shines' Film Projects
Mortlake Anzacs
Mortlake Anzacs from Colleen Hughson on Vimeo.
Mortlake Anzacs is a short factual film created on iPads by Grade 5 & 6 students at St.Colmans primary School (Mortlake, Victoria)
Primary School students Taylah Casson and Lachlan Gedye interviewed Merv Hampson in the week leading up to Anzac Day (2013). Merv is the President of the Mortlake Branch of the RSL. They were interested to know about Merv’s experience of war and the significance of Anzac Day. The rest of the Grade Five and Six class filmed the Mortlake Anzac Day Parade and interviewed some of the old soldiers marching.
‘Mortlake Anzacs’ was made as a group classroom activity. The students used their class iPads to film the interviews and parade. For many, it was their first experience at filming. This film was made in the second week of the project. In the first week, students were taught some basic principals of filming, interviewing and using an iPad for filmmaking. Mortlake Anzacs was an opportunity to practice what they had been taught and to get some hands-on filming experience in the lead up to the creation of their own films.
Filming the Anzac Day Parade only after a few lessons in filmmaking, was a steep learning curve but well-worth the experience- the students learnt as much about what to do as to what not to do, when creating a film. The ‘mistakes’ they made here were not repeated later on in their own productions.
Each student focused on a different element of the parade to film.

What do you know about dogs?
"In our film we interview Vin Gedye at his Kelpie Stud (Scorioca Kelpies). Vin gives us an insight into the life with kelpies and how they think. It takes place on the Gedye’s family farm and the interview is conducted in the shearing shed. Places that appear in our film are the paddocks, the kennels, the farm via footage of the sheep, the yards and the dogs on the back of the Ute." - Lachlan H and Lachlan G
Created by Lachlan Higginson and Lachlan Gedye, Grade Six students at St.Colman's Primary School.
Thanks to Donnie Murray, Vin and Donna Gedye and Colleen Hughson.

What does a wild life carer do?
We travelled to Lyn Faull’s house at Derrinallum to interview her about being a wild life carer. She showed us the type of animals that she cares for such as kangaroos and wallabies. She also told us all about their injuries and how hard it is to rehabilitate the animals. We enjoyed going to Lyn’s house and looking at all the animals that she had and listening to the things that she had to say about being a wild life carer. We had great fun!
Special thanks go to Colleen Hughson and Lyn Faull.
